Great question – you don’t actually need to use conditional formatting to display a negative value in red, formatting will do it fine. Just right-hand click on the cell, go to “Format Cells”, select “Currency” from the “number” tab and you can choose a red negative there.
Regarding the version – although Excel 2007 has been around a while, the take-up is still not huge and many people are still struggling with adapting to the new features of 2007. There is not as much difference between 2007 and 2010 as there was between 2003 and 2007. There are some cool new features in 2010 but for your purposes I think 2007 is sufficient. Did you see this article on Should you Upgrade to Excel 2007? There are some interesting comments there and you can download a beta copy of 2010 if you’d like to see what it is like.
There is a section on Excel version in the online courses, and we also discuss it in the workshop. I hope that helps!
